Yum Brands Raises Awareness and Money To Combat World Hunger

(3BL/JustMeans) - Hunger is a big problem around the world. According to the estimates of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, 870 million of the world’s 7.1 billion people, or one in eight, suffer from chronic undernourishment. In 2007, Yum Brands created an annual World Hunger Relief effort to raise awareness about world hunger and raise money for the UN’s World Food Program (WFP). Yum Brands describes its World Hunger Relief effort as the “world’s largest private sector hunger relief initiative,” involving over 130 countries and territories, about 40,000 KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants and almost 1.5 million employees and their families. Last year, the World Hunger Relief effort raised $37 million for the WFP.  Yum Brands has over 40,000 restaurants in more than 130 countries, with revenues of over $13 billion in 2012 and 2013. 

Yum Brands’ World Hunger Relief efforts use a variety of methods to raise awareness about world hunger, including point of restaurant purchase materials, social media, public service announcements and advertising. Christina Aguilera is WFP Ambassador Against Hunger and is featured in the World Hunger Relief effort’s new PSA released this fall. The PSA includes footage from her visit to Rwanda where she saw first hand the benefits of WFP’s nutrition programs. Since its launch in 2007, WHR effort has raised almost $150 million for WFP and other hunger relief organizations, which helps provide approximately 600 million meals that save the lives of millions of people.

The WFP is the largest humanitarian agency combatting worldwide hunger, feeding over 90 million people every year, on average, in over 73 countries. Since its launch in 1963, it has fed over 1.6 billion people and invested over $42 billion in emergency relief and development. One of the WFP’s programs provides school meals. WFP provides meals to around 22 million children in 60 countries, and has operated school meal programs for over 50 years. It is the largest provider of school meals in the world. In addition to operating school meal programs, WFP supports national governments in creating their own programs. Given the amount of malnutrition among children globally, the school meals are life saving. About 55 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition and 19 million of them from severe acute malnutrition causing the deaths of 3.5 million children every year. Severe acute malnutrition accounts globally for 35 percent of deaths among children under five.
