Here in the United States, over 1.3M highly skilled immigrants who are college educated and have legal work authorization are disproportionately consigned to the ranks of the working poor, trapped in low wage positions that do not utilize their valuable skills and experience. In their home countries they were engineers, lawyers, and nurses. In New York, they are cab drivers, cashiers, and security guards. These professionals are 82% more likely to be living in poverty than U.S. natives and between 19% and 83% more likely to be underemployed than their US-educated counterparts, depending on immigrant group.
Upwardly Global strives to move America’s skilled immigrants, refugees, and asylees out of systemic poverty by providing employment training and the skills needed to achieve professional positions within the mainstream U.S. workforce. As the only U.S. nonprofit organization addressing this long unmet need, Upwardly Global shifts its clients from alienation and poverty toward inclusion and financial sustainability, increasing their contributions to the local economy and fulfilling their own American dream.
Since 2006, during a time of economic turmoil, Upwardly Global directly serviced more than 400 immigrant professional New Yorkers through an intensive 8-week training program and has successfully placed more than 200 poverty-stricken new Americans in jobs earning an average of $40K with benefits. These placed jobseekers support approximately 600 dependents, multiplying the impact of each success. We have engaged more than 100 corporate partners and more than 600 local volunteers as mentors, mock interviewers, resume writers, and industry experts.
