At no time in history has more attention been paid to the lack of diversity in the technology industry. An increasing demand for transparency from customers, stakeholders, and employees alike, has led to growing pressure to diversify a predominantly white, Asian, and male workforce. New companies are mobilizing to take a stand on social issues, while others with a strong history of human rights are aiming to increase accountability within management to foster inclusion among their teams.
FSG’s Efrain Gutierrez recently presented in front of more than 200 grantmakers committed to LGBTQ issues in Seattle, WA, as a part of the Pacific Northwest Plenary for Funding Forward 2017, a conference organized by Funders for LGBTQ Issues (FSG is a proud member). While the session focused on supporting LGBTQ communities in the Pacific Northwest, funders in the U.S.

Lauren Shanks walked down North Charles Street this past weekend sporting #LoveWins swag as she took part in Baltimore’s Pride Parade for the third year as part of PayPal’s ongoing diversity efforts. The born and bred Baltimore native is an LGBT ally who spurred PayPal’s participation in the parade in 2015.
Merck joined more than 175 corporations in a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Merck’s CEO Ken Frazier, along with numerous other CEOs, signed a pledge, which outlines a specific set of actions they will take to cultivate a trusting environment where all ideas are welcomed, employees feel comfortable, and all are empowered to discuss this very important topic.

Barclays CEO Jes Staley met four young people who have benefited from the bank’s innovative Connect with Work programme – and heard their difficult and inspiring stories.
“I had a traumatic family life when I was growing up,” Jae Foster told Jes Staley, Group Chief Executive of Barclays, in a boardroom at the bank’s headquarters in Canary Wharf. “As a child, I was often exposed to domestic violence.”
Jae, 27, was one of four young people who have had difficult experiences but are now working thanks to Barclays’ new Connect with Work scheme – an innovative employability programme.
A good role model is hard to find – and that’s especially true if you’re a woman in the technology industry.
Role modeling, along with tackling unconscious bias in hiring and investing in programs to widen the pipeline of women in technical positions, is of course part of a well-rounded strategy for leveling the playing field.
Of those strategies, role modeling is probably the trickiest to execute well. But as we’re learning at HP, where I’m head of diversity and inclusion, it doesn’t have to be that way.
