Qualcomm and FIRST Encourage Students of All Ages to Embrace STEM

Competitive, collaborative, educational, tough, and thrilling, FIRST is a robotics program that draws hundreds of thousands of students from around the world to battle their bots.

What started with a single event in 1992 has grown so much that, this year, there were two championships: the first wrapped up in Houston, Texas and the second began in St. Louis, Missouri on April 26, running through April 30. In total, nearly 1,400 teams from more than 39 countries competed.

The FIRST Michigan robotics state championship took place at Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday, April 15, and Consumers Energy sponsored its efforts.

The competition brings together students interested in STEM-based careers–those with interests in science, technology, engineering and math. A total of 160 teams will be competing in Saginaw for the opportunity to advance to the world competition, set to be held in St. Louis, Missouri later this month.
