Leading by Example: California Mom Teaches Daughters the Importance of Giving Back

Plenty of little girls aspire to be like Disney princesses – beautiful, magical and strong.

Laura Giron’s daughters, ages 10 and 11, have been taught since toddlerhood that real magic and beauty comes from giving time and compassion to people in need through volunteer service.

Laura has worked for The Walt Disney Company in Burbank, California, for 19 years, and quickly embraced the company’s encouragement of volunteerism during off hours – involving her two daughters from the time they were tots.

Shoe designer Lucy Choi and entrepreneur Bianca Miller–Cole were the guests of honour last week at an evening of inspiration hosted by the Barclays Win Gender network.

“It’s important to take risks in life,” says shoe designer Lucy Choi. “If you believe and feel passionate about what you’re doing, then go for it.”

Choi was talking to around 100 Barclays staff who crammed into her boutique in central London last week seeking inspiration, insider tips – and possibly a new pair of heels.

In 2013, I began in a developmental position as an Environmental Officer and was permanently employed as a Senior Environmental Officer for Exploration and Strategic Projects in 2014. I moved over as a Senior Environmental Officer to Namdeb’s biggest operational mine, Southern Coastal Mines, in 2016 where I am still based.
