Okay -- just to get the facts out of the way first  -- I have practiced law since 1979, put in 25+ years at super-large and large firms.  In 2002, I was asked to put together the first microfinance-backed CDO.  I knew CDOs, I didnt know microfinance.  Nine years later I can say pretty much the opposite.  I witnessed and was (I like to believe) a significant part of the birth of microfinance as an investable capital markets asset, and in many ways the forerunner of many other business models that will tend to help improve the world -- what we wonderfully call today impact investments.

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, a 40-foot container of medical humanitarian aid for Lesotho was loaded and shipped out of Medshare’s Western Regional Distribution Center. Through the AidMatrix Network, a foundation that connects donors and relief organizations, UPS generously provided in-kind shipping of the container from California to the South African port.

One can't help but take notice when Carol Cone, the person who is considered the originator of cause marketing, says it is dead as we know it. In June, AdAge ran a column penned by Mike Swenson, CMO of Barkley, headlined "The Day Cause Marketing Died." Swenson and Cone are essentially saying the same thing. But in the rush to get headlines, maybe the real point was missed by some.
