PR News Announces 2013 CSR Award Winners
PR News celebrated the best in corporate social responsibility programs and the communications that power those programs at its 2013 CSR Awards luncheon at Washington, D.C.’s historic National Press Building on Feb. 11, 2013. More than 200 communications executives from corporations, PR agencies and nonprofits attended the luncheon to honor the work of their colleagues and peers and share best practices and lessons learned in corporate responsibility.

Among the winners in more than 25 categories were Klick Health and Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, which were co-winners for Overall Leader in CSR Practices, organizations with less than 10,000 employees, and Coca-Cola Enterprises and MGM Resorts International, co-winners for Overall Leader in CSR Practices, organizations with more than 10,000 employees. Shannon Schuyler, corporate responsibility leader for PwC, was named this year’s CSR Professional of the Year; the honorable mentions went to Teresa Dickerson of the Memphis Grizzlies, Rosa Gatti of ESPN and Paul Massey of Weber Shandwick.

This year’s inductees in PR News’ CSR Hall of Fame were also honored. The 2013 Hall of Fame inductees are companies that have redefined themselves in the eyes of employees, customers and the media with their successful CSR programs. Inducted at the Feb. 11 luncheon were Amway, for its One by One Campaign for Children, Baxter International, Coca-Cola Enterprises, CVS Caremark and UPS.

Jesse Hertstein, senior specialist, corporate citizenship at Amway, said "for us, the broader issue is so [our] distributors can meet the local needs of their communities." He added:  "There's no number one issue [per say], we focus on nutrition, but we're looking for opportunities for addressing myriad needs at the local level that are brought to us."

Eva Pereira, of R|F Binder, added:  "As lifespan grows and national reserves deplete, there's a growing need for innovation" within CSR. "For CSR, innovation starts with education."

For the second year in a row PR News celebrated its CSR A-List, agencies that have excelled in developing and managing corporate responsibility programs and social good initiatives for clients. This year’s CSR A-List includes APCO Worldwide, Blick & Staff Communications, Cone Communications, Edelman, Fleishman-Hillard, Havas PR, RF|Binder, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide and Weber Shandwick.

PR News’ CSR Awards program has grown significantly during the past two years, as organizations of all stripes have come to recognize that external and internal stakeholders expect more than just top-rate, well-priced products and services and employers with well-thought-out business plans. They expect these organizations to consider their role as members of local, national and global communities with a stake in the health and well-being of those communities and the planet that we all share.

The awards' co-presenters included Pamela Baker-Masson of the Smithsonian National Zoo; Steve Cody of Peppercom; Nicole R. Robinson of Mondelēz International Foundation and Michael Long of Georgetown University, who also led that morning’s packed workshop at the Press Club, “PR Writing for the Super-Charged Workplace.” PR News also thanks its awards partner CSRwire, for its role in spreading the word about the 2013 CSR Awards program, and congratulates all the winners, honorable mentions, Hall of Fame inductees and CSR A-List honorees. —Steve Goldstein
