Ceres President Mindy Lubber Commends Heavy Truck Standards

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) BOSTON, MA - August 9, 2011 - Ceres, the nation’s largest coalition of investors and public interest groups working to promote sustainability, issued the following statement on today's announcement of the first fuel efficiency/greenhouse gas (GHG) standards for heavy- and medium-duty trucks from 2014-2018.
Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres, said, “We applaud these standards. Companies and investors alike recognize that strong truck standards will create jobs, save businesses money and promote energy security. It’s a triple home run for our economy. As stronger standards will result in even greater benefits, we urge the development of robust standards for truck trailers as well, and for continued progress beyond 2018.” Both the Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), a coalition of major U.S. businesses, and the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR), a network of investors representing $10 trillion in assets, which are coordinated by Ceres, recognize the benefits of fuel efficiency, and participated in the public rulemaking process last fall by calling for strong standards. BICEP and INCR members recognize that advanced fuel efficient trucks will more than pay for themselves, and in turn, that those savings accrue to the greater economy. American businesses are increasingly dependent on trucking, and stronger fuel efficiency standards will reduce their fuel consumption and minimize their vulnerability to volatile oil prices.
