If you are interested in building a responsible career that successfully blends financial return with social impact and environmental responsibility, you might be interested in looking into opportunities in education.

You might think that building a career in education means being a teacher.  Well, there are a number of other positions available in the education field that does not involve teaching, or even interacting with children.  Furthermore, if you live in the US, you have certainly noted that in many states, recent changes in teachers' tenure terms...

While participating in a panel sponsored by RePower America yesterday night, I was reminded of the importance of values-based career planning, or the ability to explore and compete for opportunities that match both your career values and skill set.  RePower America aims at providing avenues to open and sustain a dialogue about how local communities can transition towards cleaner energy sources.  This is very much needed in my local community, as we are located in Indiana, a state where coal produces 96% of our energy.  As recently documented...

To socio-eco innovators (SEIs), 'responsible career' means 'generating an income from completing projects that address a social need or aim at restoring or protecting our environment'.  The good news is that today, opportunities for SEIs are available across the private, nonprofit and government sectors.  However, as an SEI, more choices means more research to determine which sector is a better fit for you to make your positive contribution to our world.  As many of my previous posts have focused on...

What better day than Father's Day to reflect upon career choices for dads?  First, the good part of balancing work and being a dad.  Employers offer more family friendly career choices now than ever before.  Indeed, an increasing number of US companies offer benefits such as flex time, and parental leaves for both mothers and fathers.

Now to the bad part -  Studies show that only about 50% of dads take advantage of these programs in the US (as compared to 85% of dads in Sweden).  Furthermore, a new 2010 CareerBuilder study shows that for dads, 2010 has been all about doing more with less.  With...

I attended two very insightful Net Impact webinars this week that reminded me of how a company's culture can very much impact the career management strategies of aspiring Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professionals.  The first webinar was facilitated by Jeffrey Hollender, and focused on his experience leading Seventh Generation and his new book 'The Responsibility Revolution' (see a great book review by...

Due to the Great Global Recession, it might seem that fewer career choices are available to 2010 graduates.  It is true that the highly visible on-campus hiring of college graduates by big corporations significantly decreased over the last couple of years.  However, career choices and opportunities to get business done better might actually have been better for 2010 graduates than ever before!

Indeed, businesses that are profitable while creating stronger communities and respecting our environment are growing.  The responsible business imperative is growing as...

Responsible Careers: Professionals that are looking for a new job that successfully blends financial return with social impact and environmental responsibility might be interested in looking into opportunities in healthcare.  Given population trends, the healthcare industry is likely to grow for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, according to a UN population report, by 2050 the number of older adults (over 60 years old) will surpass that of children (under 15 years old) for the first time in history. Furthermore, in industrial countries, the number of adults...

Responsible Careers:  Reality check for responsible careers:  'For every opening at Patagonia, we have an average of 900 applicants.'  This statement from Yvon Chouinard in this month's issue of Inc. Magazine sums up how competitive jobs that align financial return with social impact and environmental responsibility are in the current economy. This means that your chances to get an interview by just submitting your resume on the Patagonia website are 0.1%. Knowing this, it is clear that the traditional job search strategy of sending resumes in response to job postings, getting interviews...

Responsible Careers:  Strong career planning involves identifying employers whose mission and values align with your responsible career goals.  Of course, you certainly know that you can conduct company research through hoovers.com or through glassdoor.com  to find out more about the products and services a company provides, about the company's latest financial results, as well as feedback about the company culture from current and previous employees.  However, it can be difficult to assess employers that have true commitments to economic, social and environmental...
